  वैसे तो शैव और वैष्णवों में प्रतिवाद हमेशा बना रहता है लेकिन शंकर और (जय)किशन की जोडी खूब जमी और हिंदी फिल्म म्यूजिक के सुनहरे दौर की सबसे कामयाब जोडी रही। जिस दुकान में सब से ज्यादा वेराइटी होती है वो दुकान खूब चलती है या यूँ कहिए जिस बगीचे में जितने अधिक प्रकार के फूल हो वह उद्यान सबको अपनी और आकृष्ट करता है, शंकर जयकिशन का संगीत कुछ इसी किस्म का था। चाहे किसी भी प्रकार का गीत हो - शास्त्रीय रागों पर आधारित गीत, पॉप गीत, प्रेम गीत, विरह गीत, लोक गीत, भक्ति गीत या बाल गीत - शंकर जयकिशन की धुनों का जादू सब जगह चला, असफलता मानों इन्हें मालूम ही नहीं थी।

 सन १९४९ की फिल्म 'बरसात' से जो मधुर गीतों की बरसात इन्होंने प्रारंभ की, वह लगातार दो दशक चलती रही और संगीत प्रेमियों को खूब रिझाती रही। शंकर जयकिशन सबसे ज्यादा फीस लेनेवाले म्यूजिक डायरेक्टर बने। उनको साइन करने के लिए बडे बडे प्रोडूसर की लाइन लगा करती थी। बेस्ट म्यूजिक डायरेक्टर का फिल्मफेयर अवार्ड इनको मिला - एक नहीं, दो नहीं, तीन नहीं बल्कि नौ बार ! १९७१ में फिल्म 'मेरा नाम जोकर' का निर्माण राजकपूर कर रहे थे तब जयकिशन मात्र ४१ साल की उम्र में इस दुनिया से चल बसे अन्यथा पता नहीं यह संगीत जोडी कामयाबी के और कितने शिखर छू लेती।

  जब कोई गीत धून में बांधने का काम आता तब शंकर अपनी धून बनाते और जयकिशन उनकी अलग बनाते। फिर स्टूडिओ में जो धून सर्वाधिक पसंद की जाती वो फिल्म के लिए चुनी जाती थी।

  शंकर-जयकिशन ने प्रस्तुत किए हुए गीत का हर अंग बडा लुभावना हुआ करता था। चाहे वो मुखडा हो या अंतरा हो, प्रील्यूड हो या इंटरल्यूड हो, लफ्ज हो या उनके अर्थ, साज हो या रफी-लता-आशा-मन्ना डे की आवाजे या बीच बीच में बजाये गये संगीत के टुकडे... हर चीज सुननेवाले का दिल जीत लेती और उसके जीवन का एक अभिन्न अंग बन जाती। शंकर-जयकिशन का जिक्र हो और राजकपूर और मुकेश का न हो ऐसा कभी नहीं हो सकता। शंकर-जयकिशन, शैलेन्द्र / हसरत जयपुरी और मुकेश जहाँ जहाँ एक साथ आये वहाँ एक सुपरहिट गीत का जन्म हुआ। उनके संगीत के बारे में बस हम इतना ही कहेंगे - झूक गया आसमां... ।
