भारतीय सिनेमा अपने विशिष्ट फिल्म संगीत के साथ, न केवल पुरे भारत या एशिया में जाना जाता है, बल्कि दुनिया भर में मनोरंजन के साथ साथ भारतीय संस्कृति के प्रसार का एक महत्त्वपूर्ण माध्यम के रूप में काम कर रहा है। गीत, संगीत और नृत्य का होना भारतीय फिल्मों का अविभाज्य अंग और खासियत है जो पश्चिमी फिल्मों के नहीं दिखाई देती। हमारी फिल्मों में आवाज का प्रवेश हुआ १९३१ में। प्रारंभिक दौर में फिल्मों में संवाद कम और गाने ज्यादा हुआ करते थे, हालांकि, यह प्रथा बाद में कम होती गई। सन १९३४ से गाने ग्रामोफोन पर रिकॉर्ड किये जाने लगे और बाद में रेडियो पर भी बजाये जाने लगे।
दुनिया का सबसे पहला युगल गीत शायद आदम और ईव्ह ने ईडन के उद्यान में गाया होगा ! हिंदी फिल्मों में पहला युगल गीत १९३४ में रिलीज हुई चंडीदास फिल्म में उमा शशी एवं कुंदन लाल सैगल ने गाया था। गाने के बोल थे - प्रेम नगर में बनाऊँगी घर मै। हिंदी फिल्मों के रिकार्ड्स में इसके पहले का कोई युगल गीत नहीं दिखाई देता। १९५० के बाद हिंदी फिल्मों का सुनहरा, सुरीला दौर शुरू हुआ, इसके बाद सुपरहिट लोकप्रिय युगल गीतों की मानो झडी लग गयी। जहाँ तक अभिनय का सवाल है, फिल्मों में राज कपूर-नरगिस, प्रदीप कुमार-मधुबाला, दिलीप कुमार-वैजयंती माला, गुरुदत्त-वहीदा रहेमान, राजेंद्र कुमार-साधना, मनोज कुमार-माला सिन्हा आदि लोकप्रिय जोडियां रही वहीं गायकों में लता-रफी, लता-मुकेश, लता-किशोर कुमार, रफी-आशा ये कामयाब और बेहद लोकप्रिय जोडिया रही। १९९९ में विविध भारती द्वारा एक सर्वेक्षण किया गया, जिसमें फिल्म 'ताज महल' के जो वादा किया वो निभाना पडेगा यह युगल गीत बीसवीं सदी के लोकप्रिय गीतों की तालिका में नंबर दो का सर्वश्रेष्ठ गीत रहा। इन गीतों का जादू जनमानस पर आज भी वैसा ही छाया हुआ है जैसा वो पचहत्तर साल पहले था। आज भी ये अमर गीत श्रोताओं की फरमाइश पर हमारे रेडियो-टीवी पर काफी मात्रा में बजते है।
