श्रीनाथ त्रिपाठी अर्थात् एस. एन. त्रिपाठी ने जितनी भी फिल्मों को संगीत दिया, उनमें से आधी से भी ज्यादा फिल्में धार्मिक तथा ऐतिहासिक रही। उनकी फिल्मों में भारतीय संस्कृति तथा इतिहास का सरस ढंग से प्रदर्शन हुआ करता था। इनकी बेहद मीठी और मर्मस्पर्शी धुनें सुनने के बाद इस बात का सहज ही अंदाजा लगाया जा सकता है कि एस. एन. त्रिपाठी का शास्त्रीय संगीत का अध्ययन तथा रागों की समझ कितनी गहरी तथा व्यापक हुई होगी। इनकी धुनें उतनी ही रोचक और चैतन्यमयी है जैसे थिरकर नाचनेवाला रंगबिरंगा फव्वारा या क्षणक्षण में एक डाली से दूसरी डाली पर लीलया उछलता हुआ पंछी। एस. एन. त्रिपाठी का संगीत और लताजी का स्वर एक बडा ही सुमधुर मेल रहा।
एस. एन. त्रिपाठी का व्यक्तित्व बडा ही प्रभावशाली और आकर्षक था जिसके चलते इन्होंने फिल्मों में भी कई रोल किए। इन्होने किया हुआ हनुमानजी का रोल लोगों को काफी पसंद आया। इन्होने की हुई कतिपय रचनाएँ इतनी पुरानी हैं कि उनके वीडियो भी उपलब्ध नहीं हैं।
एस. एन. त्रिपाठी के गीतों का हर एक अंग - चाहे वो गाने के प्रारम्भ में आनेवाला आलाप हो, मुखडा या अन्तरा के बोल हो, बीच में बजाये जानेवाले संगीत के टुकडे हो या ताल तथा लय को लेकर किये गए उतार चढाव हो, हर चीज में उनकी प्रतिभा झलकती है। यूँ लगता है जैसे गीत के बोल सप्तसुरों का सौंदर्य बढा रहे है और संगीत के सुर बोलों का। हर चीज एक दूसरे की पूरक लगती है और इतनी कुशलतापूर्वक पिरोयी गयी है कि हजारों में कोई विरला संगीतज्ञ ही ऐसी रचनाएँ कर पाता है जिसके अंतःकरण के सुर परमात्मा के सुरों के साथ मिल चुके हो। संगीतकार चित्रगुप्त कुछ काल इनके असिस्टेंट रहे। चित्रगुप्त के संगीत में हमें एस. एन. त्रिपाठी के संगीत की कई झलके जगह जगह पे दिखाई देती है। त्रिपाठीजी का संगीत सौ प्रतिशत हिंदुस्तानी संगीत रहा है, इसे पाश्चात्य संगीत का तनिक-सा भी स्पर्श नहीं हुआ है। बीट्स पर आधारित पाश्चात्त्य संगीत की रचना करना मूलतः आसान है , संगीत निर्देशक की असली प्रतिभा की जाँच तो उसके द्वारा की गई हिंदुस्तानी संगीत की रचना से हुआ करती है।
जिस सम्मान और पुरस्कारों के एस. एन. त्रिपाठी हकदार थे वे कभी उनको मिले नहीं, यह सोचकर संगीत प्रेमियों को बडा दुःख होता है। एस. एन. त्रिपाठी के संगीत का जादू ऐसा है कि एक बार भी जो कोई जिज्ञासु उनकी धुनें सुनने को जाता है, उसके हाथों में सदाबहार गीतों का खजाना लग जाता है, जैसा की आज हमें और आपको मिला है। कितना भी लूटो या बाँटो यह घटनेवाला नहीं !
