SENTIMENTAL SONGS OF KISHORE KUMAR

  If there was any singer who could sing everything from yodeling to pathos with ease and perfection, it was Kishore Kumar. Be ready to let your heartstrings be pulled with the sentimental expressions of this versatile singer:

  It was the visionary music director S. D. Burman who first spotted the spark in the voice of Kishore Kumar who sang a few hits for Dev Anand. But the full justice to Kishore Kumar's all-round voice was done by none other than S. D.'s own son, R. D. Burman who extracted the best out of him in spite of the fact that he had no formal training in classical music like other eminent singers of the time. Interestingly, he had a shrill, coarse type of voice in his childhood and he was a laughing staff of his family members. In those days, no one had imagined that he would become a top-class singer in the years to come. During initial years of playback singing, his renditions sounded like those of K. L. Saigal but later on he molded out his own style, which gave him eight filmfare awards for best male playback singing.

  It is said that our sweetest songs are those that sing the saddest feelings. Such songs are few but they are a part of exclusive legacy of Kishore Kumar. Kishore Kumar had a voice that could paint a thousand shades of sentiments. His evoking sound is a complete delight which has the capacity to deliver the melody spiralling heavanwards echoed through the listeners' hearts. He experimented with voice recordings and at the same time, refined his singing ability. The way he sang, with the perfect tone, diction, inflexion and intonation, could only be achieved after years of classical riyaaz. He had no such background. The pain, hidden anguish and tenderness that he had in his voice would make the audience serious and introvert! His out of the world voice easily touched the depths of the emotions and gave expression to the sentiments in every lyric he sang.

  Kishore Kumar started singing from as early as 1948 but he zoomed to superstardom after the stupendous success of Aradhana and became the new singing sensation overnight. That was the period when the film fraternity and music directors seemed to have suddenly started obsessing with Kishore Kumar, creating a temporary setback for prodigious Mohd Rafi. But Rafi always used to encourage the singers. Rafisahab was full of praise for Kishore Kumar. There was a time when he had lent his voice to young Kishore. He said,"You’re such a jolly personality, there’s so much life in you. You should do more live shows!" Sure enough, Kishore Kumar and Kalyanji-Anandji performed many live shows in the following years. After the death of Rafisahab, during the era of Kishore Kumar that followed, he became the absolute voice of Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bacchan.

  Even though married four times, Kishore Kumar remained a restless and lonely soul till the end of his life. He wanted to spend last few years in his hometown, Khandwa and breathe tranquility. His dream never came true. At the age of 58, he died of a sudden heart attack. He used to say,"Life is a futile rat-race. No one is trustworthy here, you can't trust anyone."
