निर्दोष इंग्रजी बोलायला व लिहायला येण्यासाठी काही शब्द, वाक्यरचना नि व्याकरण ह्याचे मूलभूत ज्ञान असणे आवश्यक आहे. इंग्रजी लेखन, वाचन व संभाषण ही एक कलाच आहे. ह्या लेखात आपण इंग्रजी भाषा अर्थवाही आणि आशयघन बनवणाऱ्या काही Transitional phrases (संक्रमक वाक्यांश) पाहणार आहोत. इंग्रजी भाषा बोलताना वा लिहिताना त्यातील आशय अधिक सुस्पष्टपणे व ओघवत्या स्वरूपात स्पष्ट व्हावा यासाठी हे काही निवडक संक्रामक वाक्प्रचार ( transitional phrases) वापरले जातात.
कापडाची जशी वीण असते, तशी भाषेचीपण असते. भाषेची ही वीण गुंफताना त्यात शब्द, वाक्यं, विचार आणि भावना ह्यांची परिणामकारक गुंफण असणे आवश्यक असते, जेणेकरून त्यातून एक सुसंवाद प्रकट व्हावा. प्रत्येक भाषेचे एक असे वैशिष्ट्य असते की त्या भाषेमध्ये आशयाची परिणामकारकता वाढवणारे काही वाक्यांश किंवा वाक्प्रचार असतात; त्यांना संक्रामक वाक्यांश/वाक्प्रचार (transitional phrases) असे म्हणतात. इंग्रजी भाषेमध्ये सुद्धा अशा काही transitional phrases आहेत ज्यामुळे ती भाषा ऐकताना वा वाचताना एक सहजसुंदर विचारप्रवाह प्रकट होण्यास मदत होते. इंग्रजी भाषेतील असेच काही हे संक्रामक वाक्प्रचार :-
१. In the first place = सर्वात आधी
➤ Let us learn the basics in the first place. आपण सर्वात अगोदर मूलभूत गोष्टी शिकूया.
➤ It was the heartbreak that provided impetus to me in the first place for writing poems and music was the second. कविता करण्यासाठी मला सर्वात आधी प्रेरणा कुणी दिली असेल तर ती माझ्या हृदयभंगाने आणि दुसरी संगीताने.
२. Coupled with/ Together with/ Along with = च्या जोडीने
➤ Good intellect coupled with/ together with / along with good memory will fetch good marks. चांगली बुद्धिमत्ता चांगल्या स्मरणशक्तीच्या जोडीने चांगले मार्क मिळवेल.
➤ True poets are those who have received the gift of good expression coupled with/ together with / along with imagination from God. खरे कवी तेच ज्यांना भगवंताकडून उत्तम तऱ्हेने व्यक्त होण्याच्या जोडीला कल्पनाशक्तीचे वरदान लाभलेले असते.
३. Besides/ Other than = च्या शिवाय
➤ I like to read biographies which give you something to think about besides/ other than just entertainment. केवळ करमणुकीशिवाय विचारांना जी चालना देतील अशी चरित्रे वाचायला मला आवडतात.
➤ Heart pumps love, passion, sorrow, joy and faith besides just blood. हृदय हे केवळ रक्ताशिवाय प्रेम, उत्कटता, दुःख, आनंद आणि श्रद्धा ह्या गोष्टीदेखील प्रवाहित करतं.
४. Beside = च्या बाजूला
➤ A dozen books to teach spoken English are lying beside me at the moment!
इंग्रजी बोलायला शिकवणारी डझनभर पुस्तके माझ्या बाजूला ह्या क्षणी पडलेली आहेत!
➤ Don't walk behind me like a disciple or don't walk in front like a guide, just walk beside me like a friend. माझ्या मागे एखाद्या शिष्याप्रमाणे वा माझ्या पुढे एखाद्या गुरूप्रमाणे चालू नकोस तर माझ्या बाजूला एखाद्या मित्राप्रमाणे चाल.
५. By the same token = च्या अनुषंगाने
➤ There were strong winds and by the same token, high tides too. वारा खूप जोराचा होता आणि त्या अनुषंगाने उंच लाटापण.
➤ Eyes are the the same but visions differ and by the same token, a lot of different interpretations are made . डोळे जरी सारखे दिसत असले तरी दृष्टी मात्र भिन्न असते आणि त्या अनुषंगाने विविध अर्थ काढले जातात.
६. Likewise = जसे - तसे
➤ The leader monkey jumped from the tree and likewise all the monkeys jumped. माकडांच्या नायकाने झाडावरून उडी मारली आणि सर्व माकडांनीपण तशाच उड्या मारल्या.
➤ In Italy the artist is a god. In America, likewise, a scientist is a god. इटलीमध्ये जसा कलाकार देव असतो तसा अमिरिकेत शास्त्रज्ञ देव असतो.
७. Moreover = एवढंच नाही तर आणखी
➤ The forest was vast and moreover, dense. जंगल मोठं होतं आणखी घनदाटपण.
➤ Moreover, if you think wisely, you will find that every day of the year is a new-year's day. एवढंच नाही तर तू जर शहाणपणाने विचार केला तर तुझ्या असं लक्षात येईल की वर्षाचा प्रत्येक दिवस हा नवीन वर्षाचा पहिला दिवस असतो.
८. Otherwise = नाहीतर
➤ Set an alarm, otherwise I will miss my train. अलार्म लाव नाहीतर माझी train चुकेल.
➤ Forgetfulness is a blessing to humanity, otherwise life would have been difficult. विसरणे हे मानवजातीला लाभलेले वरदानच आहे नाहीतर जीवन फार अवघड होऊन बसले असते.
९. Otherwise = नेमकं उलटं
➤ I told her not to open the refrigerator until I returned, she did exactly otherwise. मी परत येईपर्यंत फ्रिज उघडू नको असे मी तिला सांगितले होते, पण तिने नेमकं उलटंच केलं.
➤ Be the master of your fate and slave of your heart, but not otherwise! आपल्या नशिबाचे स्वामी आणि हृदयाचे गुलाम व्हा, पण उलटं नको!
१०. Nevertheless = तरीही
➤ I was sick, nevertheless, I attended the school. मी आजारी होतो तरीही शाळेत गेलो.
➤ How many people shall I show you, who are poor, nevertheless, happy? असे किती लोक मी तुम्हाला दाखवू जे गरीब आहेत, तरीही आनंदी असतात?
११. Barring = सोडलं तर
➤ Match will start at 10 am, barring rain. पाऊस नाही आला तर सामना सकाळी १० वाजता सुरु होईल.
➤ Growing old is mandatory; growing wise is optional, barring a few. काही मोजक्या लोकांना सोडलं, तर वृद्ध होणं अपरिहार्य आहे पण शहाणं होणं ऐच्छिक आहे.
१२. Specifically = केवळ, विशेषतः
➤ This dress is specifically designed for pilots. हा पोशाख केवळ पायलट लोकांसाठी बनवलेला आहे.
➤ My favorite thing is to read literature on life, specifically about the moments of love. जीवनावरचं वाङ्मय वाचणं मला आवडतं, विशेषतः प्रेमाच्या क्षणांबाबत.
१३. After all = काही झालं तरी शेवटी
➤ Dreams are after all dreams. स्वप्नं काही झालं तरी शेवटी स्वप्नंच.
➤ After all, everybody has secrets which they never wish to share with anyone. शेवटी प्रत्येकाजवळ काही गुपितं असतात जी कुणीही दुसऱ्यांना सांगू इच्छित नाही.

१६. By and large/ All in all/ On the whole = एकंदरीत
➤ By and large/ All in all/ On the whole, everything is fine. एकंदरीत सगळं ठीक आहे.
➤ Life is full of good and bad times, but by and large/ all in all/ on the whole we are happy. आयुष्य हे चांगल्या आणि वाईट क्षणांनी भरलेले असते, पण एकंदरीत, आम्ही आनंदी आहोत.
➤ Spirituality, By and large/ All in all/ On the whole is the only science which has reached perfection. एकंदरीत अध्यात्मशास्त्र हे एकमेव असे शास्त्र आहे की जे पूर्णत्वाला पोचले आहे.
१७. As yet = अजूनतरी/ अजूनपर्यंत
➤ I haven't eaten a mango as yet. मी अजूनपर्यंत आंबा खाल्लेला नाही.
➤ I haven't come across anyone as yet who doesn't like the voice of Lata Mangeshkar. लता मंगेशकरांचा आवाज आवडत नाही असे म्हणणारा एकपण व्यक्ती आतापर्यंत माझ्या संपर्कात आलेला नाही.
१८. Thus far = आतापर्यंत
➤ All the attempts to find the lost plane in the sea have been unsuccessful thus far. समुद्रात हरवलेले विमान शोधायचे आतापर्यंतचे सगळे प्रयत्न अयशस्वी झाले ठरले आहेत.
➤ Out of the many discoveries I have made thus far, I can say that facts are many but the truth is one. आतापर्यंत जेवढे शोध मी लावले, त्यावरून मी असे म्हणू शकतो की तथ्य अनेक आहेत पण सत्य हे एकाच आहे.
१९. Over and above = खूपच जास्त, सर्वाधिक
➤ The fatality rate of Corona is over and above all predictions. कोरोनाचा मृत्युदर हा सर्व भाकितांपेक्षा अधिक आहे.
➤ The music created by the roar of the waterfall in the silent valley was above and all the best music I have heard so far. शांत दरीमध्ये रोरावत पडणाऱ्या धबधब्यामुळे निर्माण होणारे संगीत हे मी आतापर्यंत ऐकलेल्या सर्व संगीतामध्ये सर्वाधिक सुंदर संगीत होते.
२०. All the more (better) = अधिक (चांगले)
➤ If you can get up before sunrise, all the better. सूर्योदयापूर्वी उठू शकलास तर अधिक चांगले.
➤ Our friendship has become all the more beautiful since our hearts were joined by the rainbow of love.प्रेमाच्या इंद्रधनुष्याने हृदयं जोडली गेल्यापासून आमची मैत्री अधिकच सुंदर झाली आहे.
२१. All over again = सुरवातीपासून पुन्हा सगळं
➤ The farmers had to sow seeds all over again. शेतकऱ्यांना सुरवातीपासून पुन्हा पेरणी करावी लागली.
➤ The secret of success is putting your heart, mind, intellect and soul together and trying all over again after you fail. अयशस्वी झाल्यानंतर आपले हृदय, मन, बुद्धी आणि आत्मा एकत्र करून सुरवातीपासून पुन्हा प्रयत्न करण्यातच यशाचे खरे गमक आहे.
२२. Although / Even though = जरी
➤ Although it is dark, I will walk home alone. जरी अंधार आहे तरी मी घरी एकटा जाईन .
➤ Logic is one thing and common sense another, even though both sound the same. जरी दोन्ही सारखे वाटत असॆ तरी, तर्क एक गोष्ट आहे आणि बुद्धी दुसरी.
२३. To top it off = ह्या सर्वावर वरकडी म्हणून, कळस चढवणे
➤ He scored a double hundred and topped it off with a six on the last ball. त्याने द्विशतक ठोकले आणि शेवटच्या चेंडूवर षटकार मारून कळस चढवला.
➤ Spring has come! There is beautiful sunshine, birds are singing, squirrels running around and to top it off we have a new baby in our house! वसंत ऋतूचं आगमन झालंय! सुंदर उन पडलं आहे, पक्षी गात आहेत, खारी बागडत आहेत आणि ह्या सर्वांवर वरकडी म्हणून आमच्या घरी एका बाळाचं आगमन झालं आहे!
२४. Ironically/ Paradoxically = विपर्यास म्हणून, अनपेक्षितपणे
➤ Ironically/ Paradoxically my cold got better after eating ice-cream. माझी सर्दी आइसक्रिम खाल्ल्यावर अनपेक्षितपणे बरी झाली.
➤ Science has progressed astonishingly. Ironically/ Paradoxically, peace of mind is getting increasingly rare. विज्ञानाने आश्चर्यकारक प्रगती केली आहे. पण विपर्यास असा की मनःशांती अधिकाधिक दुर्मिळ होत चालली आहे.
२५. As such/ With that said = असे असताना
➤ The rainy season is coming. With that said/ And as such we have to plough the field. पावसाळा तोंडावर आलाय. असे असताना आपल्याला शेताची नांगरणी करायला पाहिजे.
➤ Body and mind are like a man and wife. As such/ With that said, they do not always agree with each other. शरीर आणि मन हे एखाद्या नवरा-बायकोप्रमाणे असतात. असे असल्याने, त्यांचे एकमेकांशी पटेलच असे नाही.
२६. Contrary to / As opposed to = ह्याला विपरीत
➤ Contrary to/ As opposed to everybody's expectations, Julia won the gold medal. सगळ्यांच्या अपेक्षांच्या विपरीत, जुलियाने सुवर्णपदक पटकावले.
➤ Too many medicines kill a person contrary to/ as opposed to the belief that they cure the patient. खूप औषधे घेतली म्हणजे माणूस बारा होतो ह्या सर्वसामान्य कल्पनेच्या विपरीत खरं तर, अति औषधांनी माणूस मरतो.

४२. Eventually = शेवटी एकदाचा
➤ Eventually, he found the lost donkey. शेवटी हरवलेलं गाढव त्याला एकदाचं सापडलं.
➤ Love begins with a smile and eventually ends in tears. स्मितहास्यामध्ये प्रेमाची सुरवात होते आणि सरतेशेवटी अश्रुंमधे त्याचा अंत होतो.
४३. Every so often = वारंवार, प्रत्येक वेळी
➤ You won't find a pearl in an oyster every so often. प्रत्येक वेळी शिंपल्यामध्ये तुम्हाला मोती मिळणार नाही.
➤ The cuckoo and I feel like whistling every so often. It seems, the spring has arrived! मला आणि कोकिळेला सारखी सारखी शिट्टी वाजवावीशी वाटत आहे. वसंताचं आगमन झालं वाटतं!
४४. As of (this) = च्या पर्यंत, च्या पावेतो
➤ As of today, I have never missed Ramayana on TV. आजपर्यंत मी TV वर रामायण चुकवलेले नाही.
➤ As of this event, everybody thought that life was just a bed of roses. ही घटना घटेपर्यंत प्रत्येकाला असे वाटत होते की जीवन म्हणजे एक गुलाबाची शय्या आहे.
४५. All the way from = पार इथपासून (तिथपर्यंत)
➤ Chant the stotra again all the way from beginning to the end. हे स्तोत्र पुन्हा सुरवातीपासून शेवटपर्यंत म्हण.
➤ All the way from beginning of the creation to this day, the sun has never forgotten to rise and birds to sing. सृष्टीच्या अगदी प्रारंभापासून तर आजपर्यंत सूर्य उगवायचा विसरला नाही आणि पक्षी गायला.
४६. As it turns out = पण असं दिसतंय खरं
➤ Today is the final paper of my exams, but as it turns out, it may need to be postponed due to lockdown. आज माझ्या परीक्षेचा शेवटचा पेपर आहे, पण पण असं दिसतंय खरं की लॉकडाऊनमुळे तो पुढे ढकलावा लागेल.

४७. In preference to = च्या ऐवजी, च्या पेक्षा
➤ New Zealand was chosen in preference to Canada due to better geographic location. भौगोलिक स्थानाची अनुकूलता बघून कॅनडाच्या ऐवजी न्यूझीलंडची निवड करण्यात आली.
➤ I would love to stand in front of God with a hundred failures to my credit in preference to a conscience of not doing any effort at all after my death. काहीही प्रयत्न न करण्याची बोच अंतःकरणात घेऊन मृत्यूनंतर ईश्वरापुढे उभे राहण्यापेक्षा शंभर अपयशांचा धनी होऊन उभे राहणे मला जास्त आवडेल.
४८. In all probability/ Most probably = कदाचित नक्कीच
➤ In all probability, we will touch the shore today. आज कदाचित नक्कीच आपण किनाऱ्याला स्पर्श करू.
➤ Any medicine which fails to give you a refreshing sleep is, in all probability/ most probably not a medicine at all. जे औषध तुम्हाला ताजेतवाने करणारी झोप देऊ शकत नाही ते कदाचित नक्कीच औषध म्हणून गणले जाऊ नये.
४९. What's more = एवढंच नाही तर
