एखादा अमेरिकन किंवा ब्रिटिश माणूस जेव्हा मराठी बोलतो तेव्हा ते ऐकताना आपली करमणूक होते! ह्याचे कारण, शास्त्रशुद्ध अस्खलित मराठी बोलणे त्याच्यासाठी जवळजवळ अशक्य कोटीतली गोष्ट असते आणि त्याला कितीही असे वाटत असले की तो अत्यंत शुद्ध मराठी बोलत आहे तरी बोलताना होणाऱ्या बारीकसारीक चुका त्याच्या काही केल्या लक्षात येत नाहीत. अगदी जवळपास हाच प्रकार घडतो जेव्हा आपण (भारतीय माणूस) इंग्रजी बोलायचा प्रयत्न करतो आणि समोरचा मूळ इंग्रजी भाषिक माणूस आपल्याला ऐकत असतो! आपल्या बोलण्याच्या ओघात अशा अनेक त्रुटी होतात ज्या केवळ ज्यांची मातृभाषा इंग्रजी आहे अशा लोकांच्या चट्कन ध्यानात येतात. एक चुकीचा शब्द किंवा चुकीच्या जागी घातलेला बरोबर शब्द वाक्याचा अर्थच पूर्णपणे बदलून टाकतो. अगदी मोठमोठ्या वक्त्यांच्या बोलण्यातही अशा चुका कधी कधी होऊन जातात. शेवटी, शुद्ध मराठी बोलण्यासाठी जसे तुम्हाला पुणेरी लोकांच्या सहवासात काही काळ असणे आवश्यक आहे तसे शुद्ध इंग्रजी बोलण्यासाठी मूळ इंग्रजी भाषिक लोकांच्या सहवासात काही काळ घालवणे आणि त्यांच्याशी संभाषण करणे आवश्यक आहे. एकवेळ भाषा बोलताना थोडासा फेरफार चालून जातो (informal English) आणि खपवूनही घेतला जातो पण इंग्रजी शुद्ध स्वरूपात (formal English) लिहिणे असेल तर थोडेबहुत परिश्रम घेणे आवश्यक आहे. ह्या लेखामधे (भाग -१), भारतीय लोक इंग्रजी बोलताना/ लिहिताना ज्या चुका करतात, अशा चुकांची काही उदाहरणे आपल्याला बघायला मिळतील.
