Late Morning Ragas

Late Morning Rāgās and Associated Songs

Nat Bhairav

My heart hurts and it wants to pour out. It pours out with credence that it will be heard and sympathized with. Its lamentful narration needs recognition. No worries, it will be back to its mirthful ways once its grievance is reciprocated. Little assurance and relief is expected to come naturally. There is a perpetual regret looming around that the heart is being ignored when it was so much invested in love. Fears are being pushed around. Rather, the heart desires to be led by dreams. It desires to live a life full of passion, prayer and magic. Nat Bhairav is in line for the prayer which expresses a hope that things will work out for once and everything will be fine once again.

Miyan Ki Todi

Miyan ki todi takes life very seriously and philosophically. He has lost his faith in humanity which lacks character, morality and conscience. Outright dislike would have been preferred to this neglect and indifference. He is baffled by this unheralded behavior of humans. He has a lot of questions to ask who would be able to solve them. He turns to God who allows these crooked ways to govern life. He is not satisfied with the way the strongest and the wisest rule here. He is searching for ways to restore his faith in humanity. He is searching for the faith which is so essential for survival, the faith which is a necessity and not a luxury. After all, the essence of being human is to embrace humanity, destroy walls and build bridges.

Jaunpuri

Jaunpuri best expresses the intense anguish of the heart in a gentle manner. The intensity of feelings runs through and through. It may be an intense longing while remembering someone or an intense longing to forget someone or an intense longing to dedicate oneself to someone. This intensity may lead a soul to total frustration or towards revival of new hopes. He understands that a life of hardship and suffering is unavoidable. He must either learn to endure with smiles or suffer in silence. Languishing in the black hole of despair or in the vortex of the void has become unbearable for the heart. No act of escape will save him from the battering ram which is bent upon inflicting pain after pain. Silent weeping is best expressed by Janupuri.

Gurjari Todi

A shade of nostalgic sadness accompanies the expression of Gurjari Todi all along. Time won't pass so easily because the mind has turned pensive. It knows that it is missing something or going to miss something very soon and it has to prepare itself for those moments. Will the heart be able to bear those hollow moments? Once upon a time, those were or will be so full of life. But the wheel of time turns so cruelly that these moments keep clinging to the walls of the heart like those lifeless nests hanging on the trees after the birds fly away. Those moments never come back to me again, so let me travel through time to embrace them just to have a glimpse of my longing fulfilled.

Ahir Bhairav

There are a few questions the human mind has not been able to solve and never will be. Those questions are- 'why', 'why not' , 'why me only'. Ahir bhairav has got excellent expressions to voice out these eternal questions. It was really not my fault, but then why did it happen to me? This mystery has squeezed my heart so bad that no answer is going to appease it. Yes, it hurts me without my permission! Have I committed an error? Just speak out, silence would hurt even more. I know I can't escape pain, I want to feel the beauty, tenderness, and freedom of healing. Let me weep, that's probably the only way solace may come.

Charukeshi

When they say that the path of love is the most slippery path, they mean it. This is the path where the eyes are ready to trust the unseen, the ears are ready to believe in the unheard and the mind feels that the path to the temple of love is nothing but a bed of roses. Rāgā Charukeshi takes all these possibilities into consideration, but with a grain of salt. There is a constant fear of separation when united and a constant anticipation of reunion when separated. The heart demands assurance, twice, thrice, a hundred times and still, it is not sure! What is not visible to the eye is visible to the heart and it will always hope for the better. When the heart speaks, the mind may not always agree. The heart has its reasons, what reasons it knows not, perhaps it is always in search of restlessness, on the backdrop of which love will feature most prominently.
