What is a rāgā? A rāgā is a set of musical frequencies delivered in a specific order and scale which is capable of eliciting specific moods related to that particular set of frequencies. Does this definition seem too crude to you? in cornball voice, a rāgā is a string of musical notes capable of touching your soul. In Sanskrit, a rāgā means passion. It is an exceptional attribute of Indian classical music. Just like a set of lines drawn in a specific way is capable of creating a beautiful picture, specific notes are capable of giving birth to melodious music. There are rāgās specific to the seasons and timing of a day. In this article, we are going to plug into morning rāgās which are sung well after the sun is up. (Time: 8-10 am)

Late Morning Ragas

Late Morning Rāgās and Associated Songs

Alhiya Bilawal

The sun is up and there are cheers in the air. The day has begun with the promises of hope. There is an exuberance of joy everywhere. This rāgā expresses pure, unadulterated joy. The whole universe is happy and replete with exhilaration without a reason. The mountains are calling and you must go. You don't have to walk on your knees a hundred miles through the desert in search of land of happiness. Look at that little tuft of grass growing through the cracks in the stone. The world is ever ready to offer itself to your imagination. Look at the sky, look at the brooks, let your eyes feast on the bountiful nature. You will feel that God wants to see you happy. This thought should make you happy. Don't be ashamed to weep while you rejoice and don't feel ashamed to smile when you cry, be innocent like a child. There is no place for grief and worry. Alhiya Bilawal is all about the lightness of mood.

Bhupali and Deshkar

Both of these early morning rāgās are close affiliates. They are contemplative, they are philosophical. They express life in a composed and metaphysical manner, but they are not resigned, they are spontaneous. Life is never perfect and a slight disagreement seems obvious while accepting the fact that it is going to remain so, for keeps and always. One ought to learn to be happy while learning to live with the imperfections of life. One should never think that tomorrow will be a new day without any imperfections. If you wish to enjoy freedom, there should be freedom for making mistakes and accepting the mistakes of others as well. This is what makes life a little insecure, however defeat, disappointment and despair are the tools life uses to show the way. Both these rāgās provide proper notes to explicate these moods.

Asawari

The heart is filled with love and devotion for someone but then why doesn't my beloved respond? It is filled with so much tenderness and flowing with so much compassion. There is uncertainty, this longing may not be answered at this very moment but, yes, hope is keeping it alive. Someday, sometime, my avid yearning will be acknowledged. Will my love story find a perfect ending? I am given to sing only such songs which don't rhyme and those stories which don't end on a happy note. My dreams and I are growing apart, moment by moment. I don't care for my outward appearance, I wish my soul be healed from thy one glance and a soft smile.

Rāgā Asawari articulates such feelings so perfectly and delicately.

Todi

The singer of Todi is very serious about life! He is not satisfied with the way the world is reacting. He has a lot of expectations from the world. This unsatisfied grief finds a good expression in Todi. It is very difficult to say whom the soul is singing for. He is singing, probably, to himself, to the moon and stars or to no one. His petition finds an echo from beyond the horizon, he is satisfied with it! Todi outlines a lonely heart which is prepared to walk the path of love without giving in to despair. It is eternally hopeful. The soul echoes every time it longs for love - I'll find you! There is no place on this earth or heaven you can hide from me. I love every part of you, every thought and word. I love being the answer to every question my heart could ask. And if I die in your love, a part of me will always remain with you.... Todi is so full of tenderness, it is so soulful and yet so lonely.

Sohini

The wind blows, the water flows and life goes on with its ups and downs. This rāgā expresses wavering, uncertain nature of life with a wishful shade to the narration. Isn't it a great punishment to burn with desire and keep quiet all the time? Once upon a time the heart lay frozen because there was no desire in it. It was a tragedy. Ever since it started to desire someone, it is double tragedy. Every little movement occurring in nature, like falling down of a leaf from a tree or  a remote call of a bird, seems to magnify it. A heart eager to share its battered state with someone will find a perfect expression in Sohini.
