Rāgā Pahadi is as extensive and majestic as the Himalayan ranges. It stemmed from the folk music of the mountains before finding its roots in the rich Indian classical music repertoire. Pahadi is a mall for musicians, playback singers, classical vocalists and folk singers. Pulled all its ingredients (aroha, avaroha, vādi, samvādi swarā) together deftly under a maestro's fingers, Pahadi is capable of producing an exquisite piece of melody. It can also sometimes lead to a disaster when pursued by an inexperienced vocalist, but that is not the morsel of today's feast. There are a few films which have survived just because of the songs composed in Pahadi when their stories didn't hold any water. It is difficult to say whether rāgā Pahadi became popular because of the musicians or musicians who rose to fame by virtue of this rāgā! It's indeed a mystery where these sweet tunes originated in the musicians' minds from. In fact, it seems that these tunes came from their genes or even beyond that. It is not just the job of a calculating brain or an intelligent mind to conceive such anthems. The great sheer number of songs molded by this rāgā validate this verity. Some of the golden melodies enlisted below are the recipients of 'once more' from the audience no less than ten times in a single show! Isn't that amazing? Some of these gems were the habitual rankers in the top ten listings of Binaka Sangeet Mala. The song 'Jo vaada kiya vo nibhana padega' even ranked in top five songs of last century. You will realize the pith of these rāgā as you tune in the following melodies. You will be held spellbound, speechless and seduced as you tune finely into the following compositions.
You will relish the way Rāgā Pahadi torments you softly and lovingly. You will love the way it robs you of your peace and leaves a tender abiding pain in your soul. You will take delight in basking in its warmth which melts your heart without letting you know about it. You can alight on the wings of its notes to have an excursion through unexplored mountains and valleys without paying a penny to a travel company. Have you ever spoken to a mountain? Just try it and it will respond in the form of an echo as if it upholds what you say and stands up to back your feelings. Rāgā Pahadi resonates with this expression. It echoes out the state of mind which lies between a dream on one hand and actual fruition of the dream on the other. It is full of anticipation, a state between yes and no, a dilemma between could be and could not be..... It is so painful! The finish is so close but so elusive that you fail to get your hands on it. Promises give you a heart and their vanity breaks your heart, but you are poised and standing your ground, unmoved. This dignified composer is the grace of this rāgā. You can't escape from its elegance.
