Like Bluetooth, Miracast is a technology which enables you to connect your mobile phone to your HDTV or projector without using a HDMI cable or an intermediate router, although you need a Miracast Dongle. Miracast dongle is sold under various brand names. In the US some of the most popular Miracast dongles are - HDMI Dongle , ScreenBeam, Microsoft Adaptor, Fiyapoo, Anycast etc. In India, Mirascreen is the most popular.
If you have a smartphone with Android version 4.2 and above (most 4G phones have this) and your TV/Projector is HDMI compatible (becoming increasingly popular now), you are all set to go. This process is called screen mirroring which enables you to project your favorite YouTube videos, movies, games and other multimedia stuff on your TV screen. You will be glad to know that Miracast is capable of transmitting Full Hd video and 5.1 surround sound, as well. 😅
I ordered the Miracast Dongle on Amazon but the manual which accompanied the pack presented the information which was quite inadequate. I had to go through many articles and tutorials before I trumped up this easy step-by-step walk-through tutorial to help you connect your gadgets together.
As we know, you will require three things-
1. A 4G smartphone or any android phone with version 4.2 and above. You can connect to an iPhone also, but in that case, you need a home router and it becomes rather complex.2. HDTV or projector with HDMI and USB socket.
3. The cable which accompanies with Miracast Dongle has the following three components: a. a small pin to be inserted at the back of the dongle b. a USB pin c. a hanging sensor or antenna
➤Now follow the following steps:
1. Unpack your instrument and insert the small cable end into the dongle.
2. Locate HDMI port on the back or your TV/ Projector.
3. Insert the dongle into HDMI port. Some TVs have multiple HDMI ports like HDMI 1, HDMI 2 etc. Just keep in mind which port you have plugged in.
4. Now, insert the USB pin into the USB port. This helps to charge the dongle. Now, if your TV doesn’t have a free USB port, you can use an external 5V-1amp USB power adapter to power the dongle.
5. Let the sensor hang freely. It is meant to catch the wi-fi signals emitted by your mobile phone.
6. Just pick up your remote and press the source button. Toggle to HDMI.
7. You will see the following circuit diagram on the screen. It displays two diagrams actually. The left one for the Apple instruments and the right one for windows and the android. The PSK number you see at top is the password that your wifi network may ask for.
8. There is a small button at the back of the dongle. You can switch between the diagrams by pressing that switch on and off. Select the right one meant for android.
9. Now pick up your mobile and turn the wifi on. Enter the password if it asks for it.
10. Open the settings by clicking the settings icon . Locate the option meant for wireless connectivity or screen mirroring. In different mobiles, it is present there with different names. In Samsung Galaxy mobile it is given by the name of Smart View, In Galaxy Tab and Sony mobiles it is given as Screen Mirroring, in Huawei it is designated as Multiscreen, in LG mobiles it is Share and Connect, in Oppo it is Other Wireless Connections > Wi-Fi Display, in Asus mobiles it is PlayTo, in Motorolla and Lenovo phones under Device, Display > Cast screen, in Vivo, turn on WLAN Display, in HTC it is Media output, in Meizu it is More > Wireless display, in OnePlus and Google Nexus go to Display > Cast screen, in Xiaomi Redme it is wireless display. Click on that and your mobile will start searching for the nearby wireless devices. Within a few seconds, you will see ‘MiraScreen ……….’ Appearing on the mobile screen. Touch it with love and there you are done!
On our Samsung screen, I prefer HDMI 2 to HDMI 1 as it supports Full HD or WXGA resolution. Watch the photographs and videos of your loved ones on the big display and say thanks to this inexpensive wonderful technology called MIRACAST SCREEN MIRRORING.
A few useful tips when using Miracast:
1. Keep the auto screen rotation of your mobile enabled so that you can view the image in horizontal mode.
2. If repeated plugging and unplugging of Miracast Dongle is too cumbersome for you, use one 50 cm HDMI extension cable and keep it plugged permanently into the HDMI port.
3. Once every year, check for firmware updates. This YouTube video will explain you how to update the firmware of your dongle.
You can order a Miracast Dongle online:
