मराठी TO ENGLISH शब्दमाला – भाग 30

डोंगरांमध्ये बोललेला ध्वनी आपल्याकडे पुन्हा पुन्हा परत येतो, त्याला प्रतिध्वनी म्हणतात. कधी कधी शब्द क्रियेच्या रूपाने परत येतात, त्याला प्रतिक्रिया म्हणतात. चांगले शब्द, चांगली प्रतिक्रिया! केवळ शब्दार्थ मांडण्यापेक्षा मराठी शब्दसमूहाचा भावार्थ व्यक्त करणारे काही निवडक इंग्रजी शब्द ह्या शब्दमालेत दिलेले आहेत. प्रत्येकी दहा शब्दांचा (words, phrase or idiom) समावेश असलेल्या मराठी-इंग्रजी शब्दमालेचा हा भाग - 30.

▪ पोलिसांनी टाकलेला वेढा = cordon
The Lebanese army had to cordon off the area where militants fired rocket-propelled grenades. अतिरेक्यांनी बॉम्ब लावलेले रॉकेट्स डागल्याने लेबेनॉन सैन्याला त्या क्षेत्राला निलंबित करणे भाग पडले.

▪ किंचितपण नाही = not in the least
I am not interested in indoor games, not in the least. मला घरातल्या खेळांमध्ये रस नाही, अगदी किंचित पण.

▪ सोंग = affectation
My argument was an affectation but it did the job. माझा युक्तिवाद हे एक सोंग होते पण त्याने आपले काम केले.

▪ चालाख, लबाड = guileful
Beware of those guileful phone calls who assure you to double your money in three months. तीन महिन्यात तुमचे पैसे दुप्पट करून देण्याचे आश्वासन देणाऱ्या फोन कॉल्सपासून सावधान राहा.

▪ भोळा = gullible
The guileful will easily deceive the gullible. लबाड व्यक्ती भोळ्या व्यक्तीला सहज फसवेल.
- Syn: naive

▪ उपाशी आणि भुकेला = famished
Famished people in Yemen were reduced to eating leaves to stay alive. येमेनमधील उपाशी लोकांना जिवंत राहण्यासाठी झाडांची पाने खाणे भाग पडत होते.

▪ आपली ओळख लपवून ठेवणे = to sail under false colors
Shivaji Maharaj and his mates sailed under false colors to enter the Lal mahal. शिवाजी महाराज आणि त्यांच्या साथीदारांनी आपली ओळख लपवून लाल महालात प्रवेश केला.

▪ रागाने बाहेर निघून जाणे = to storm off
Maharaj stormed off Aurangjeb's court who ignored him purposefully. आपल्याकडे जाणूनबुजून दुर्लक्ष करणाऱ्या औरंगजेबाच्या दरबारातून महाराज रागाने चालते झाले.

▪ हेल काढून बोलणे = to drawl
Jackson who had dense graying beard spoke firmly in his particular drawl uder a black hat. दाट करडी दाढी असलेला आणि काळी टोपी घालणारा जॅकसन दृढतेने वैशिष्ट्यपूर्ण हेल काढून बोलत असे.

▪ एक विशिष्ट सिद्धांत वा तत्त्वप्रणाली = doctrine
According to the doctrine of Vedantic philosophy, a soul and God are not different. वेदान्तिक तत्त्वज्ञानाच्या सिद्धांतानुसार आत्मा आणि परमात्मा भिन्न नाहीत.
