मराठी TO ENGLISH शब्दमाला – भाग 28

  काही काही शब्द फक्त एखाद्या विशिष्ट भाषेतच सापडतात . जसे- उर्दूमधील 'अंगडाई', हिंदीतील 'गुंजाईश', मराठीतील 'पुण्य' इ. ह्या शब्दांना इंग्रजी भाषेत प्रतिशब्द नाही. केवळ शब्दार्थ मांडण्यापेक्षा मराठी शब्दसमूहाचा भावार्थ व्यक्त करणारे काही निवडक इंग्रजी शब्द ह्या शब्दमालेत दिलेले आहेत. प्रत्येकी दहा शब्दांचा (words, phrase or idiom) समावेश असलेल्या मराठी-इंग्रजी शब्दमालेचा हा भाग - 28.

▪ योजनांवर पाणी फेरणे = to cast a damper on
The cloudy sky cast a damper on our comet watching plan. ढगाळलेल्या आभाळामुळे आमची धूमकेतू निरीक्षणाची योजना बारगळली.

▪ नुकतेच पंख फुटलेले पाखरू = fledgling
Dream for the sky always, my lilliputian fledgling! हे माझ्या चिमण्या पिला, नेहेमी आकाशाची स्वप्नं पहा!

▪ टीकात्मक = cynical
You can't be cynical all the times, you have to trust somebody somewhere. प्रत्येक वेळी टीकात्मक दृष्टीकोन ठेऊन चालत नाही, तुम्हाला कुठेतरी, कोणावरतरी विश्वास ठेवावाच लागतो.

▪ कालखंड = epoch
The collision of an asteroid with the earth signified the end of an epoch we call Mesozoic Era. एका उल्केचा पृथ्वीशी आघात होऊन एक कालखंड संपुष्टात आला ज्याला आपण Mesozoic Era असे म्हणतो.

▪ हीन, निकृष्ट = sordid
The YouTube video received thrashing comments for its sordid content. हीन दर्जाचा मजकूर समाविष्ट केल्यामुळे ह्या युट्युब व्हिडिओला खूप खरमरीत प्रतिक्रिया मिळाल्या.

▪ अविचल राहण्याचा मनाचा गुणधर्म = equanimity
Arjunạ lost his equanimity and Lord Krishnạ had to narrate Gita on Kurukshetrạ. अर्जुनाच्या मनाचा समतोल ढळला आणि भगवान कृष्णाला कुरुक्षेत्रावर गीता सांगणे भाग पडले.

▪ जादूटोणा, चेटूक = sorcery
Sorcery is a kind of black magic which is very prevalent in Bengal. चेटूक हा करणीचा एक प्रकार आहे जो बंगालमध्ये फार प्रचलित आहे.
