मराठी TO ENGLISH शब्दमाला – भाग 20

  काही काही शब्दांचा परिवार खूप मोठा असतो, म्हणजे एक शब्द लक्षात ठेवला की अख्खा परिवार लक्षात राहतो तर काही काही शब्दांचा परिवार छोटा असतो. केवळ शब्दार्थ मांडण्यापेक्षा मराठी शब्दसमूहाचा भावार्थ व्यक्त करणारे काही निवडक इंग्रजी शब्द ह्या शब्दमालेत दिलेले आहेत. प्रत्येकी दहा शब्दांचा (words, phrase or idiom) समावेश असलेल्या मराठी-इंग्रजी शब्दमालेचा हा भाग - 20.

▪ किमतीबाबत घासाघीस करणे = to haggle over
Don't haggle over the prices with poor sellers. गरीब विक्रेत्यांसोबत किमतीवरून घासाघीस करू नकोस.
- Syn: to bargain, to negotiate

▪ दाट आणि केसाळ = shaggy
Shaggy winter coats are made from the skin of yaks. याक प्राण्यांच्या कातडीपासून दाट केसाळ हिवाळी कोट बनवले जातात.
- Syn: furry

▪ सर्वसाधारण = no great shakes
What is Anushka's new movie like? No great shakes. अनुष्काचा नवा चित्रपट कसा आहे? काही विशेष नाही.
- Syn: mediocre

▪ डळमळीत = wobbly
All the passengers panicked as the plane turned wobbly in the air. विमान हवेत डळमळीत होऊ लागताच सर्व प्रवासी घाबरले.
- Syn: shaky, trembling

▪ एका झटक्यात करून टाकणे = to knock off
Let me knock these four questions off and then we will go and play cricket. एवढे चार प्रश्न मला एकदाचे संपवून टाकू दे, नंतर आपण क्रिकेट खेळायला जाऊ या.

▪ एका झटक्यात तयार करणे = to knock up
Let me knock up these two vases and then we will sit to make garlands. एवढ्या दोन फुलदाण्या मला बनवून घेऊ दे, नंतर आपण हार करायला बसू.

▪ कसेतरी उरकून टाकलेले = slapdash
The book shows many mistakes due to slapdash proofreading. निष्काळजीपणे केलेल्या फेरतपासणीमुळे पुस्तकात अनेक चुका दिसत आहेत.
- Syn: slipshod, sloppy

▪ अकल्पनीय कर्तृत्वाने इतिहासात अमर झालेला = legendary
Legendary voice like that of Lata Mangeshkar comes into being once in या thousand years. लता मंगेशकरसारखा अमर स्वर हजारो वर्षांतून एकदा जन्माला येत असतो.

▪ स्तुतीपासून दूर राहणारा, निगर्वी = sell-effacing
These are twins - one is self-effacing and the other is self-aggrandizing. ह्या जुळ्यांपैकी एक आहे अत्यंत निरहंकारी तर दुसरा आत्मप्रौढीप्रिय.

▪ एखादा सिद्धांत मांडणारा = exponent
Shankaracharya is the exponent of advait philosophy while Padmapada and Sadannada are its proponents. शंकराचार्य हे अद्वैत तत्तवज्ञानाचे जनक आहेत तर पद्मपाद आणि सदानंद हे त्याचे प्रचारक आहेत.
