What is a rāgā? A rāgā is a set of musical frequencies delivered in a specific order and scale which is capable of eliciting specific moods related to that particular set of frequencies. Does this definition seem too crude to you? in cornball voice, a rāgā is a string of musical notes capable of touching your soul. In Sanskrit, a rāgā means passion. It is an exceptional attribute of Indian classical music. Just like a set of lines drawn in a specific way is capable of creating a beautiful picture, specific notes are capable of giving birth to melodious music. There are rāgās specific to the seasons and timing of a day. In this article, we are going to plug into the early morning rāgās which are sung around sunrise (time: 4-8 am).

Bhairav

Rāgā Bhairav is full of loving philosophy. This rāgā has a shade of uncertainty because one doesn't know what the outcome is going to be! It has a shade of solemnity because there is an element of nostalgia. Every one of us has got their own philosophy of life. Children have their own way of looking at life, a successful person has his own philosophy and an unsuccessful person has his own. One has to bear with everyone and his ways, however grave or frightening, petty or infinite they prove to be. Talking about infinity, Einstein presented his own philosophy. He said - Two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity; of which he was not sure about the universe. Barring such rare instances, philosophy usually assumes a solemn tone, it makes one contemplative. Such contemplative moods find an ideal way to express in rāgā Bhairav. This is also a perfect rāgā for singing prayers which express earnestness and gravity.

Bhatiyar

The heart finds the best expression to voice its feelings when filled with devotion and reverence for somebody. To the world, you may be one person but to a valentine his beloved is the complete world. Furthermore, being an early morning rāgā, it is a commonplace rāgā for devotional music. Just see, how the fleeting, jovial, light notes of Bhatiyar skimming on the surface reflect lingering austere, pensive and solemn shade deep down just like the trace of lingering darkness at the crack of the dawn.

Basant Mukhari

This rāgā reflects the romantic mood in a controlled way. Moreover, anything happening in nature seems to endorse this tie-up of two hearts. Everything seems just beautiful - dark clouds, white clouds, the rain and the sunshine, the trees laden with flowers and fruits, rivers and mountains, they are favorable in every way! Things that never interested you before become greatly fascinating. There is never a time or place not entitled to love. No matter how common one is, these feelings make him feel very special. The heart is growing larger, and the larger it grows, the more love it holds! It seems that there is nothing more beautiful than the union of two hearts in the world.

Bairagi Bhairav

Bairagi bhairav reflects the detached feelings of roaming mendicants who have lost their interest in the world and renounced it. The expressions of this rāgā resonate with the squalls of a wandering monk who is waiting for the ray of light to emerge out of dark clouds. He is far away from the loving reality which he was once a part of. At the end of the day, it's about how much you can bear, how much you can endure. This can happen temporarily in the life of anyone, for that matter. Breaking down is so easy after breaking up! It is so painful to wait to bridge the chasm created by time and circumstances with no possibility of it in sight.

Bhairavi

It is one of those versatile, evergreen, all-encompassing rāgās. You can portray any color on a white paper, so can you express any mood with bhairavi. It is capable of expressing a whole spectrum of human emotions. Love and sarcasm, affection and apathy, union and separation, joy and sorrow, longing and loathing, huff and relish, dismay and assurance, surprise and setback, a broken or heavy or delighted heart...

Lalit

The beetle must be probably singing this rāgā as it flies from lotus to lotus. There are complaints about life and they should be there. The brook won't produce music if there are no stones in its way. Lalit rāgā is all about narrating this unsatisfied state of mind in a most satisfying manner. But for those complaints, there would be lacunae in love; they are so essential for the happy culmination of a relationship. They are like the lines drawn on the flowing water, they will mingle with the flow again. They are the source of celebrated trophies in the race for love. Man invented language to satisfy his deep need to complain and man invented complaint to satisfy his deep need to love. Every person knows best where his own shoe pinches, nevertheless it is forgivable as long as it doesn't bring blood.

Jogia

Raag Jogiya reflects a deep meditative mood. This is a type of mood where your body consciousness is on the decline and you are absorbed deep into the memories of your beloved. They are so overwhelming that you have forgotten your body, that body you care so much for when you are fully conscious. One knows there is no coming back to consciousness without pain. Generally, it requires courage to peep deep down into the consciousness because that is the place where all the contradictions arise from. But for someone, whose heart is filled with love and love only, he can descend into it anytime. Because, that is the place where one can contemplate upon the infinity of love, can have a glimpse of cosmic love. To live in the rut on a day-to-day basis is insufficient for human beings, we need to transcend and transport to get beyond ourselves, seeking a holiday from outer restrictions to absorb the beauty of the inner world. Ever wonder how Mukesh's voice is fit for this rāgā?
