Out of experiments and experience, these are some of the tips which evolved while I was using my JioFi hotspot device. Go through them. If you have a JioFi hotspot router, these guidelines will give you a rewarding experience, too.

Reliance Jiofi JMR 1040 hotspot

    JIOFI: Valuable Tips

  * Don't buy a JioFi hotspot device from online stores other than a Reliance Jio store. I got my JioFi hotspot JMR 1040 for Rs 999/- At the time, the same model was available for Rs 1499/- or 1599/- on Amazon or Flipkart or other online stores.

  * The first thing you need to do as soon as you receive your JioFi hotspot router is, before inserting the battery, note down the Wi-Fi SSID and password written inside the device. The SSID is something like JioFi hotspot_20F0DAE and pwd is something like 3bk2bps25v. You will need those for two purposes: First, resetting your Wi-Fi network SSID and Wi-Fi password which you are supposed to do online and second, if you need to reset your JioFi hotspot back to company settings in future, if required.

  * Don't confuse between the usernames and pwd of the WebGUI log-in page and those of your device. The url of WebGUI is http://JioFi hotspot/local/html . The default username and pwd of WebGUI is administrator only. Let's see how to change it.

  - Insert the sim card and battery and connect your device to PC using any USB data cable. (Charger cable)

  - Open http://JioFi hotspot/local/html in your browser. This site won't open if your JioFi hotspot device is not connected.

  - Click on the login button in the top right corner.

   - Enter 'administrator' in both fields. You may be prompted to change these credentials. If you wish to, change those or leave as it is. I changed these credentials because typing 'administrator' consumes a lot of time! They are also available at Settings > User management > Account management,

   - Now, under settings, navigate to Wi-Fi settings. There enter the SSID and pwd which you have noted down on the paper. While typing, don't confuse between zero and O. Change those just like we do while setting our mobile hotspots. Remember them.

  * Now that you have opened the settings, I will suggest a few more important ones. Implement them if you wish:

  a. On the Wi-Fi settings page you just visited, there is an option: Max number of Wi-Fi users. If only 3 people from your family are going to use the router, make it 3. Keep it to a minimum. It provides an extra layer of security to your device.

  b. Somebody told me this increases the speed of your internet. Yes, it works in my locality. Go to Settings > LTE > APN Management. From Auto change to Manual and then to IV4. Try it or leave it.

  c. The default standby time of JioFi hotspot is 30 minutes, after that it goes into sleep mode once you switch off wi-fi. Reducing the standby time will help save the battery life. Go to settings > Advanced > Sleep mode > Change standby timer on battery from 30 to 10 minutes or any value you wish. In my opinion, 7 minutes is ideal.

  * Charging Tips and Tricks: JioFi hotspot comes with a 5V-1amp charger which takes about 3 hrs 30 min to fully charge the device. If you happen to use our regular mobile charger (5V-2amp), it will charge your device in half the time but it will harm the health of the battery by heating it, so don't use mobile charger often unless there is urgency. On the contrary, if you try to charge the JioFi hotspot by connecting to the USB of your PC or laptop (5v-0.5amp), it will take twice the regular time to charge while maintaining the battery in the best of its state.

If the battery of your JioFi hotspot gets damaged due to some reason, you could still charge it using a regular mobile charger after throwing the battery out. But it that case you have to keep it connected constantly to a power source. You can't carry it in your pocket.

Upon observation, the JioFi hotspot will show the different speeds of charging from different sources:

Discharging Battery: Under various situations, the speed of discharging of JioFi hotspot also differs. See the following table:

rate of discharginf of Jiofi under various conditions

  * A blue blinking Wi-Fi icon indicates that the device is in sleep mode. Press the on-off button for a split second to bring the device back to normal working mode.

  * Don't use WPS button. Enabling WPS means anyone can use your Wi-Fi without a password behind your back. You can disable it by going through settings.

  * The best signal is received when the distance between your device and JioFi hotspot is between 5 to 15 feet. Taking your smartphone very close to the router has a deteriorating influence on the network speed.

  * Network Sweetspots: If you check the network strength, you will find that it is not uniform at every place, it varies from place to place even within a room itself. There are some 'sweet spots' in a room where the network signal is full solid green most of the time. Figure out such spots in your room and always try to keep JioFi hotspot on such spots whenever you are using it in the room. You will definitely get better speeds.

  * If you take a speed test of your network (many websites and apps are available for this), you will find similar looking units. Don't confuse between Mb and MB, Kb and KB. One MB = 8 Mb, that means 1 MBps = 8 Mbps. Similarly, 1 KBps = 8 Kbps.

Remember one more thing – Internet speed when connected via USB cable will be almost double the speed you get when you connect using Wi-Fi. When I connected my device to PC with a USB cable, I got 4.6 Mbps. When I connected with Wi-Fi, the speed dropped down to 2.4 Mbps.

  * For a Better Internet Experience: If the speed of your internet connection is n Mbps, you can connect maximum n devices with your JioFi hotspot. Connecting more than that will create a lag. I have also noticed that in the early morning hours, the network speed is 6 times faster than the peak evening hours. The reason is obvious. The population of our country is 130 crores!

Switching on and Switching off the Device

There is a particular way to switch on and switch off the device in different modes and it must be done in the right manner.

When the battery of JioFi falls to zero, the device gets switched off automatically. Before you switch it on, you must charge it for at least 10 minutes. Now, press the on-off switch for 2 seconds. All the buttons will turn red and the device will start normally after 8-10 seconds. To switch off the device, press the on-off button for 2 seconds, the buttons will turn red and the device will be switched off.

When your device is in stand-by or sleep mode (when the wi-fi icon is blue and blinking) and you want to switch off the device, you can not do so directly. First, you have to switch the device on (by pressing on-off button for a split second, the device will start in 5 seconds) and then switch it off using the procedure given above.

If your JioFi has shut itself down due to battery drain, please don't try to start it forcefully. First, charge it for at least ten minutes and then only switch it on. Otherwise, you will end up damaging the unit. This is very important as you will encounter this situation very often.

In the end, I would like to salute the patriotic Ambani family for the digital revolution in the making of a new India.

  * Here is the list of JioFi hotspot icons under various conditions and what they indicate:
